TRANSHUMANCE – UNESCO INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE SITE
The largest sheep drive in the Alps, which takes place in Val Senales, is known far beyond the borders of South Tyrol. Called the transhumance, thousands of sheep in South Tyrol are driven up to the pastures at the back of Ötz Valley and then down again in autumn. The shepherds use the same paths as our forefathers, among them Ötzi.
Ötzi 19991
The ‘Tyrol Iceman’ was discovered high up on the Tisenjoch glacier. Since then, Val Senales has been world-famous as the home of the iceman, along with the magical date of his discovery, 19991. Actually having seen Ötzi gives anyone bragging rights. Visitors to the interactive archaeology museum archeoParc, situated right next door to Berghotel Tyrol, learn more about Ötzi and the earliest days of humankind.
